Market brief
UK average today: 88.07p per litre

Iran and Oman are in talks about opening a shared shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, the sea lane that normally carries about a fifth of the world's oil. Traders took it as a sign that oil is starting to move freely again, and the price fell for a third day running.

Brent crude, the oil that sets what UK refiners pay, dropped below $81 a barrel. Kerosene came down with it, and hard: our price tracker fell more than 4ppl in a single day to about 82ppl, so a 1,000-litre fill now costs roughly £817. That is the cheapest heating oil has been since the middle of July.

It is still dear against last year. The same fill cost about £526 in late August 2025, so heating oil is around 55% more expensive than it was a year ago, though today's price sits some 11ppl below the 93ppl high at the end of July.

Two things decide where it goes next. Whether those corridor talks turn into ships actually sailing through the strait, and whether Washington follows through on its warning to penalise countries still trading with Tehran.
