Daily Market Brief

18 August 2026

The ceasefire between the US and Iran has run out, and President Trump has said he will not extend it. After attacks on tankers, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz - the sea lane that carries about a fifth of the world's oil - all but stopped over the weekend. Oil rose on the news, with Brent crude back above $91 a barrel and the cost of kerosene climbing with it.

Our price tracker now puts the UK average at just under 90ppl, so a typical 1,000-litre fill costs about £895. That same fill was closer to £830 at its cheapest point earlier this month, before the latest trouble pushed prices back up.

The bigger picture is the gap with last year: in August 2025 a 1,000-litre fill cost about £533, so heating oil is now roughly two-thirds dearer than it was a year ago. Today's price is still a few pence short of the late-July peak of just over 93ppl.

Two things will decide where the price goes next: whether tankers begin moving normally through the Strait of Hormuz again, and whether Washington and Tehran get back around the table. For now the market is treating the standoff as unresolved, and prices are holding near their recent highs.
