Heating oil is more than 60% dearer than it was this time last year. Our price tracker puts the UK average just under 89ppl today, so a 1,000-litre fill costs about £889. The same fill cost about £535 in the middle of August 2025.

Prices have come off the top since the start of the month. The average was 91.1ppl on 1 August, about £911 a fill, so today is roughly £22 cheaper. The past week has been choppy rather than falling: the average dipped to 82.9ppl on Monday before climbing back through the high 80s. Prices sit about 4ppl below the 93.4ppl reached on 22 July, and a long way below the 135ppl peak of late March.

Crude is doing most of the work. Brent traded around $87 a barrel today, down about 2% on the day. The Strait of Hormuz, the shipping lane that normally carries about a fifth of the world's oil, has been effectively shut since late February. Between 8 and 15 ships a day crossed it in early August against roughly 130 before the conflict, and the International Energy Agency warned on Wednesday that reopening it is becoming more pressing as stockpiles are drawn down.

Iran's foreign minister says an agreement with Oman on the waterway is close, but that it will not reopen until Washington eases sanctions and pays war reparations. Domestic demand is at its summer low ahead of the autumn restock, which is holding prices below where the supply picture alone would put them.
